DIY Hollywood Regency Tray

Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!
Mine was so relaxing!
First, I so enjoyed my extra hour of sleep last night!
I had a wonderful day off the day before, I drove to Colonial Williamsburg and started my Christmas shopping!   I also snuck into J Crew and did a little clothes shopping for myself!  With all the CrAzInEsS of shopping I came home and crashed!

So today I got up early, made a huge pot of coffee,  and got to work on a few of my projects!
I wanted to share with you all  this Fab Tray Redo!
I bought two of these wood trays at TjMaxx a few months ago when I found them on clearance for $3.00.
I really wasn't sure what I was going to do with them at that point, but I got to thinking that they might look good as wall art in my bedroom.  While I liked this idea the paint looked kinda yellow with all the  crisp whites I have in there, so they ended up with one being used to hold some candles; and the other, a lamp and a few baubles and books.

I started off giving it a good coat of white paint.   I had some martha stewart  paint left over from another project so I just used that, don't remember the name.

It took several coats to cover up the gold pattern on the inside, so while the coats were drying I started working on  my bedroom drape project!
I've never made lined drapes before so it took a few times of ripping out seams to figure out exactly how I wanted it to come out!  But like any true DIY'er I kept going and I think I'm now on the right track!
I' hope to get them finished in the next day or so, so pictures of that are coming soon!

The next step was to figure out the pattern I wanted to create on the bottom of the tray, this is what I came up with!

I still had to trim the bottom left corner!

I finally found this Frog Painters tape I had heard so much about, none of our local Home Depot's or Lowes carried it!  I found it the other day when I was getting some Benjamin Moore paint at Ace Hardware.
I have been reading about this tape all over blogland and have been searching for it ever since!

Well I'm not sure how I feel about it.  Look how my lines came out!
I even pressed the edges of the tape onto the wood really hard before I painted!

Yikes!
But don't worry,  I have a pretty steady hand when it comes to painting, so I took a tiny detail brush and went along the lines touching up all the mistakes.
I think it looks good now!

I gave it a few coats of Minwax Polycrylic  and this is the finished result!

I think I did a pretty good job cleaning up the lines!
I will have to give the Frog Painters tape another try,  it may have been user error!
I have just heard to many good things about it not to try it again!

I have a few ideas for this Chic Hollywood Regency style tray, most of which don't entail it being used as a tray at all!  I'll post pictures when I decide exactly where its new home will be!

Don't forget my Thank You Giveaway is still going on!  You have until Tuesday morning to enter!
The Jonathan Adler book is great! Whoever wins will LoVe it!

  6. It's beautiful, Ashley. I love Frog tape but when I painted my floor and used it to create a painted rug look, I had a little bit of touching up to do. Still so worth it and your tray looks gorgeous! Thanks for linking to the DIY Project Parade! ;)
